Dr. Dhananjaya Regmi is an eminent mountain geomorphologist and glaciologist from Nepal. He earned his PhD in Environmental Earth Science from the Graduate School of Environmental Earth Science at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, in 2006. Before pursuing his PhD, Dr. Regmi served as a Geography Teacher at Budhanilkantha Higher Secondary School and as a Research Assistant at the Himalayan Climate Center in Kathmandu, Nepal.
After completing his PhD, Dr. Regmi worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow for the Global Land Project at the NODAL office in Sapporo, Japan. He further enriched his expertise with a three-month post-doctoral course on dendrochronological research (study of tree rings) at Arizona University, USA, as a Haury Fellow. In Nepal, he has been actively engaged as an adjunct professor in the Central Department of Geography and Environmental Science at Tribhuvan University and as the vice-chairperson of the Nepal Geographical Society in Kathmandu.
Since 2007, Dr. Regmi has been heavily involved in climate change and ecological restoration efforts as the President of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER), Nepal Chapter. He is also the Chairperson of both the Himalayan Research Expedition (HRE) and the Himalayan Research Center (HRC), Nepal. These organizations work towards improving the livelihoods of high-mountain communities and conduct intensive research on the Nepal Himalayas.
Dr. Regmi played a crucial role as a technical advisor, glaciologist, and glacier lake expert for the Imja Lake Lowering Project, which was successfully completed at an altitude of 5,100 meters. Building on this success, he is now working on innovative ways to utilize natural glacier lakes as reservoirs for generating hydropower. His efforts focus on sustainable solutions for managing Nepal’s natural resources.
Dr. Regmi has published extensively on topics such as geomorphological changes, tourism, landslides, floods, earthquakes, and glacier lake outburst floods. His lifelong work is dedicated to understanding the challenges faced by mountain communities and finding solutions to improve their livelihoods. Through his efforts, Dr. Regmi has made significant contributions to promoting sustainable tourism and ecological resilience in Nepal.
